Time to Complete: More than an Hour
Step 1
Preheat oven to 275° F. Test temperature with Oven Thermometer for perfectly cured clay.
Step 2
Bake sign and numbers for 20 minutes; all unfinished wood surfaces that will support clay during curing process must be pre-baked. Let cool completely and then sand away any visible sap. Attach sawtooth hanger to back of sign.
Step 3
Glue numbers to sign. Paint surfaces that will not be covered with clay Olive Green; leave wood bare where clay will touch it to ensure better bond. Let dry completely.
Step 4
Prepare clay, conditioning one package of Spanish Olive. Roll several long ropes 1/4" to 3/4" diameter. Use photo as guide to create rope border around edge of sign face. Ropes need not be continuous; create some tapered or curled sections to add visual interest. Be sure all sign edges are covered; sample border is 2 ropes wide.
Step 5
Condition second package of Spanish Olive clay one block at a time to create focal motif at top of sign. Make comma shapes, curls and flower. To ensure uniform commas, use Super Slicer to evenly divide block into required number of segments before shaping clay. One block of clay will yield any of the following: 1/4"-thick, 5”-long rope with tapered ends for curls; 2 large, 3 medium or 4 small commas; 4 wedge-shaped flower petals; 7 tiny commas plus 1 ball for flower center. Arrange shapes so they are all connected. Transfer motif from work surface to sign using Lift ‘n Scrape. Dot back of motif with Bake & Bond and gently press to sign.
Step 6
Using similar clay shapes, add additional details to corners and sides of sign, dotting back of each shape with Bake & Bond before gently pressing to sign. Be sure to cover any visible seams in clay ropes.
Step 7
Use Clay Tool Variety Set tools to add texture to clay details. Use Knife Tip to add score lines to flower petals. Use Blunt Point Tool to create repetitive pattern on curls and long ropes. Use Ball Head Tool to make circular impression in wide end of each comma and in flower center. Use flat handle of the Knife Tool to flatten or blend areas as desired.
Step 8
Roll any clay scraps into long ropes 1/4" to 3/8" thick with tapered ends. Use ropes to fill in majority of design area on each number, dotting back of each rope with Bake & Bond before gently pressing to surface. Condition additional blocks of Spanish Olive as needed to complete ropes for numbers.
Step 9
Condition remaining clay one block at a time to add curl and comma details to numbers as desired. Arrange shapes so they are all connected, dotting backs with Bake & Bond before gently pressing in place. See Step 7 to add texture to clay details.
Step 10
Bake on an oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275° F for ~30 minutes. Do not microwave.Do not overbake. Let cool completely.
