Adorn your haunted holiday tree and create this creepy cage with a crow and skull for your next Halloween gathering and when it’s dark admire your glow-n-dark skull!
Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Take wire cutters and cut four 9” long pieces of your black 20 gauge wire. Hold the four pieces of wire together bend in half and take jewelry pliers and pinch together and twist a few times.
You should end up having eight pieces that you can open up to make a cage. Take your orange seed beads and insert one to each of your eight wires. Set aside.
With the Clay Conditioning Machine on the #2 setting, roll a piece of Black clay into a sheet. Cut out a 2” scalloped circle with a cutter. With the Clay Conditioning Machine on the #3 setting, roll another piece the Black clay into a sheet. Cut out a 1 3/4” scalloped circle with your cutter.
Lay the small scalloped circle on top of the larger circle. Use the Needle Toll from the Clay Tool Starter Set and make 8 evenly spaced holes around the small top circle. Set aside.
Make a 5/8” oval Black ball. Pinch end of oval to sculpt your crow beak and tail. Create crow detail with the blunt knife tool.
With the Clay Conditioning Machine on the #3 setting, roll another piece the Black clay into a sheet. Stamp out a 1” heart with cutter. Use a rick-rack blade to cut your heart in half and a knife tool to create wing lines. Add some Bake & Bond and attach wings to your crow. Make a hole in the bottom of crow with the needle tool.
Cut both ends off your toothpick with a wire cutter. Save the end pieces for another step. Condition a piece of Orange clay and run it through the #6 setting of the Clay Conditioning Machine. Coat the toothpick with Bake & Bond and wrap it with Orange clay. Take a thing piece of Black and coil it around theOrange stick- leaving spaces to have orange show through. Set aside.
Create a ¾” ball of Glow in the Dark clay. Take the clay ball and roll in Glow in the Dark glitter for a subtle shimmer. Use fingers to pinch and sculpt the skull head. Use your blunt point tool to create the eyes, nose and mouth. Create a hole on top of head.
Add Bake & Bond into the hole of skull head and insert your Orange and Black stick and attach the crow.
Use one end of the cut off toothpick tip and insert it the center of your cage base add Bake & Bond and place your skull and crow on top. Bake as directed above. Once cooled you can paint details to your crow and skull.
Push the cage wires through the holes of the base and with jewelry pliers curl the end of each wire on the bottom side of the base to form feet. Insert Black string at top and display your Halloween ornament.
