Textured Granitex beads combined with silver chain creates a unique necklace.
Getting Started
Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Step 1
Condition the Black Granitex and roll out a sheet on the thickest setting of your Clay Conditioning Machine. Cut into thirds and stack so you have a slab that is three times the thickness of the sheet you rolled out.
Step 2
Using your Super Slicer blade cut 5 rectangular pieces that are about 3/16” wide and 1-3/4” long. Use your fingers to pinch the ends into a little bit of a taper.
Step 3
Use the side of your needle tool and draw diagonal lines on the top of each piece starting at the top left and moving towards the bottom right. Draw about 7 lines. Next draw diagonal lines that cross the ones you just drew; draw these from the top right towards the bottom left, also draw 7 of these lines.
Step 4
Use the needle tool to poke holes through the sides of these rectangular pieces about 3/8” from the top, make sure to center the hole from side to side. Set to the side.
Step 5
Condition the Aqua Granitex and roll 3 balls that are about ¾” in diameter. Press each of the balls flat until they are discs about ¼” thick. Use the side of your needle tool to draw lines along the edges of the flattened balls; draw the lines about 1/8” apart. Once you have the lines drawn lay the discs onto their flat sides and cut in half.
Step 6
Use your needle tool to poke holes into the flat side of each half of disc about ¼” from the top. Set to the side
Step 7
Bake all the beads according to the instructions above and let cool completely.
Step 8
While your beads are baking you can start to prepare the chain for stringing into the necklace. Use the wire cutters to cut the 14” length of chain in half so you have two 7” lengths of chain. Take one of the pieces of chain and add one of the split rings. At the end of the other length of chain add the lobster claw clasp using one of the split rings.
Step 9
Once the beads are cool you can start to string them onto the beading wire and add them onto the chain. Take one end of your beading wire and slide on a crimp bead. Put the same end of the wire through the open loop of the chain, at the opposite end from your split ring or clasp, bend it over, and feed it back through the crimp bead. This makes a loop that will secure the beading wire onto the end of the chain. Use your flat nose pliers to press the crimp bead flat onto the wire. Trim away the little bit of beading wire that is sticking out from the side of the flattened crimp bead.
Step 10
String the beads and spacers on in the following order; start with a spacer, add a half disc, a spacer, and then a rectangle. Keep following this pattern making sure to put a spacer in between each bead. You should end up with a spacer at each end and a half disc at each end; leaving you with 6 half discs and 5 rectangles.
Step 11
Once you have all the beads and spacers strung onto the wire it is time to attach the end of the beading wire to the other half of chain. You will add the crimp and loop through the end of the chain like you did in Step 9 but you will have to pull the tail of the beading wire so all the beads pull close together and you have no gaps showing. Once you have the tail pulled down and the beads all snug together you can flatten the crimp bead and trim away the extra wire.
