Create this quaint little Leprechaun figure sitting on his pile of rocks.
Getting Started
Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Step 1
Condition the Beige clay until smooth. Shape a ball about the same size as the face mold you have chosen (from the Grandma-Grandpa mold). Roll ball into a cone shape. Press the clay, cone point first, into the nose area of the face mold.
Step 2
Set the mold with the clay still pressed in off to the side to “rest”. This allows the clay to firm-up making is easier to bend out of the mold without distortion. Insert a toothpick into the neck area of the face. Build up the neck area by adding more clay.
Step 3
Add a ball of Beige clay to the back to the head to round it out. Smooth all seams with a tool or a wet finger.
Step 4
Mold the ears provided in the mold. Pop out of mold and add to the side of the head. Smooth the contact points of the ears.
Step 5
Check the lines of the face and define them with a sharp tool to intensify the character of your piece.
Step 6
Press Beige clay into the feet and hand areas of the mold. Remove from the mold and define the finger and toe areas. Build up wrist and ankle areas with additional clay. Bake the feet, hands and head with the toothpick intact in a calibrated oven reliably set to 275 °F for 30 minutes per 1/4 inch of thickness. NOTE: pieces can be baked longer, NOT HOTTER!
Step 7
When the pieces are cool, bring life to the face by gently applying blush or chalk to the cheeks; use gel pens or acrylics to paint the eyes. A small amount of gray chalk under the eyes will help give your Leprechaun a little wisdom and age!
Step 8
Glue mohair to the chin and back of the head for beard and hair.
Step 9
Condition the Brown Granitex clay and form a small mountain of rocks for your Leprechaun to sit upon. Bake this nifty seat.
Step 10
Condition the Green clay with a small amount of Black added to it for a deeper color. When the clay is smooth and consistent in color, form a rectangle for the body. Place the rectangle on the pile of rocks. Apply a small amount of Translucent Liquid Sculpey to the underside of the rectangle to assure the pieces will bake solidly together.
Step 11
Roll out a long log with the remainder of the Green/Black mixture. Cut into 4 equal logs. Use two logs for arms, and two logs for legs. Use the end of a paintbrush to make an indentation deep enough to insert each foot.
Step 12
Apply Translucent Liquid Sculpey to the point where the ankle will join the pant leg. Attach each leg to the bottom of the Green body triangle. Be sure to place a drop of Translucent Liquid Sculpey where each piece attaches.
Step 13
Arrange the feet to a position that pleases you, and then smooth the seams.
Step 14
Repeat the same steps for adding the hands to the arm logs, and the arms to the triangle body. Slip the toothpick that is attached to the head into the top of the triangle.
Step 15
How does he look? When satisfied with where the head should be, remove your finished head, and bake the body sitting on the rocks. When the body is cool, add a small amount of glue to the head toothpick, and insert it into the previously made hole.
Step 16
Add accessories to your creation such as shamrocks or maybe a pot of gold! Share and enjoy your Little O'Premo Leprechaun!
