A recycled corn chip container is a great way for kids to get involved with the green movement. Kids can use this brightly decorated container for a bank, pencil holder, or just to store all those treasures that kids have. They will have lots of fun making this project.
Getting Started
Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first. All baking should be completed by an adult.
Step 1
Clean out can. Set lid aside. Apply a thin film of glue onto outside of can and set aside for about 5 minutes so glue is partially dried.
Step 2
Wash hands between color use. Roll out a large sheet of Blue clay. Use roller tool to flatten to about ¼” thickness. Use cutting edge of plastic tool to cut a straight edge at top of sheet. Place clay sheet onto the can. Smooth seams and set aside.
Step 3
Roll one ½” wide strip of Green clay for lower grass and a 2” wide strip for larger grass. Cut edges using wavy tool. Press larger strip onto bottom of can and then press small strip onto bottom of larger strip at base of container. Lay can on side onto cookie sheet. To keep from rolling place a small glass jar on each side of container.
Step 4
To make T-Rex: Roll a 6” long Red log of clay about 1” thick. Roll one end to a point. Flatten slightly to make the middle of the body larger than the head and tail end. Curve the neck areas and flatten the head. Use cutting tool to make a mouth and use a toothpick to make nostrils at the head end.
Step 5
Make two tiny Red string arms and larger logs for legs. Bend legs into an L shape. Mark feet with toothpick. Press one leg to one side of body and other leg on opposite side as seen. Press on arms the same way.
Step 6
Roll strings of Orange clay to make strips on back and press on. Roll two small Yellow balls of clay for eyes and two smaller balls of Blue clay for iris. Press onto head. Roll a few tiny balls of white clay for teeth and press onto mouth.
Step 7
Place T-Rex onto container on grass area. Roll tiny balls of Hot Pink clay and press onto body. Roll tiny strings of Orange clay and press onto T-Rex back and tail.
Step 8
To make Terry Saur: Roll two long teardrops of Yellow clay and press onto container near T-Rex for wings. Roll and press two balls of Yellow clay for feet, mark using toothpick. Roll a small log from Orange clay for head. Roll ends pointed. Cut one end in half for mouth. Press onto body. Roll balls of White clay for eyes and Blue clay for iris and press onto head.
Step 9
Roll tiny teardrops of Orange clay for sun. Roll a ball of Yellow clay for face and press onto sun on container. Mark smile. Roll and press on Purple clay eyes.
Step 10
Use EZ Shape tool to make flowers from yellow clay. Roll balls of Purple clay for one flower if you wish. And press onto container.
Step 11
Roll various size balls of White clay for clouds. Press randomly on container as seen.
Step 12
Bake in oven at 275 °F for about 20 minutes. Let cool before removing.
Step 13
Place lid on if using for a bank. Have an adult cut out a slit in the lid for placement of money. If using this project as a pencil holder just leave lid off. Glue fabric trim around edge of can if you wish.
