Bead Kit with Matching Tin

Nanetta Bananto, Leaf Cane technique originated by Marie Segal

A handmade polymer clay bead kit and matching tin. Makes a great gift.

Getting Started

Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Making the Bead Baking Tray

Roll Scrap Clay through the Clay Conditioning Machine on the widest (#1) setting. Lay on glass. With glass marble or other rounded object, make indentations with a circular motion. With soft brush, dust with baby powder and bake. Let cool. Baby powder does not need to be reapplied unless you notice beads sticking. You now have a great way to bake round beads that stay round. Use again and again.

Preparing the Tin

If there is a thumb indention in tin, cover with a pinch of clay and bake with tray.

Making the Canes

Working with polymer clay in warmer temperatures may make slicing the canes somewhat difficult. To make the canes easier to slice put them to the side and let them “rest” for a while so they become firm.

Step 1 Petals

Make a triangle shape, about 2” long, from 1/4 package of Atomic Orange.

Step 2 Petals

Mix marble sized pieces of Atomic Orange and Lemon Yellow to make Yellow/Orange. Roll the Yellow/Orange through Clay Conditioning Machine, on the medium setting, usually #4. Wrap around triangle. Slice 1/2 way through end with Super Slicer.

Step 3 Petals

Roll 1/4 package White through Clay Conditioning Machine on the medium setting usually the #4 setting. Insert white strip into the slice you made above; then wrap triangle with White.

Step 4 Petals

Reduce by pulling and stretching, not rolling. Start in center, pressing and stretching slowly.

Step 5 Petals

Cut into 3 equal pieces, lay side by side. Roll White sheet over Atomic Orange snake, reduce and cut into 3 pieces. Place little dot canes between each petal cane. Cut assembly in half.

Step 1 Center Cane

Roll a White sheet of clay made on the medium setting (#4 setting) of Clay Conditioning Machine over a 3” snake made from 1/8 package of Red Hot Red. Reduce covered snake to 7” long. Cut into 7 pieces. Arrange 5 around center roll.

Step 2 Center Cane

With leftover snake, reduce and cut into 5 smaller snakes. Arrange in between the first five.

Step 1 Flower Cane

Cut center to a little larger than petal canes. Arrange the two, three petal canes around the center.

Step 2 Flower Cane

Fill spaces in between petals with White snakes. Roll gently, cut into three parts, and reduce to three different sizes.

Step 1 Leaf Cane

Roll Lime (1 – ½ sections out of 4) through the Clay Conditioning Machine on the widest setting, #1 setting

Step 2 Leaf Cane

Roll White Premo through the Clay Conditioning Machine on a medium setting, #4, cut into 2” x 2 1/2" rectangles, stacking colors alternately.

Step 3 Leaf Cane

With Super Slicer, cut through stack corner to corner, making two triangle halves.

Step 4 Leaf Cane

Smoosh into teardrop shape.

Step 5 Leaf Cane

With two white sheets of clay rolled through Clay Conditioning Machine on the medium setting (#4) in the middle, place teardrop shapes together and cover cane with white sheet.

Step 6 Leaf Cane

Reduce as above, by pinching and pulling, cut into three canes and reduce to three sizes.

Step 1 Little Flower Cane

Roll snakes of Red Hot Red, Lime and Yellow/Orange and cover with sheets of Lemon rolled through the Clay Conditioning Machine on the medium setting (#4).

Step 2 Little Flower Cane

Reduce Yellow/Orange and Green snakes into 5 pieces each.

Step 3 Little Flower Cane

Arrange around Red Hot Red center as shown.

Step 4 Little Flower Cane

Wrap in a sheet of White rolled through the Clay Conditioning Machine on the medium setting (#4). Reduce this cane.

Step 5 Little Flower Cane

When all canes have become firm, slice 1/2 of each cane into slices about 1/8" thick.

Step 1 Covering the Tin

Using the scrap ends of canes, roll together with 1/4 package of White. Do not mix well.

Step 2 Covering the Tin

Twist colorful log at both ends, until you get stripes.

Step 3 Covering the Tin

Flatten with fingers, then roll through Clay Conditioning Machine at the widest setting (#1). You will have a striped sheet.

Step 4 Covering the Tin

Slice sheet into strips with Super Slicer to cover sides of the bottom half of the tin.

Step 5 Covering the Tin

Pierce any air bubbles with the Clay Knife and smooth. With the back of your fingernail, smooth top of strip to follow contour of tin, rounding the upper edge.

Step 6 Covering the Tin

Be sure to leave tin top on as you work. Smooth seams where strips join.

Step 7 Covering the Tin

Mix remaining striped clay into a ball, to create marbling. Roll in the Clay Conditioning Machine on the widest setting (#1).

Step 8 Covering the Tin

Place tin on marbled sheet. It will stick to the metal. Turn over and trim away excess with Clay Knife.

Step 9 Covering the Tin

Smooth striped and marbled areas together. Bake at 275 °F in a calibrated oven (use oven thermometer) for 30 minutes per ¼” of thickness, and cool.

Step 10 Covering the Tin

Apply light dusting of baby powder to striped sides. Depending on how much clay you have left over, you may add more White to the mix and marble.

Step 11 Covering the Tin

Roll through Clay Conditioning Machine at widest setting (#1). Lay top of tin on sheet and cut to fit with Clay Knife.

Step 12 Covering the Tin

Cut strips for sides, join and smooth.

Step 13 Covering the Tin

Bake at 275 °F in a calibrated oven (use oven thermometer) for 30 minutes per ¼” of thickness, and cool.

Step 1 Finishing Tin

Place largest cane slice in center of tin top.

Step 2 Finishing Tin

Add four leaves and four smaller flower canes.

Step 3 Finishing Tin

Continue until top is completely covered with slices, like mosaics.

Step 4 Finishing Tin

Follow slices down the sides, creating an irregular edge.

Step 5 Finishing Tin

When complete, add an additional large cane slice over the top of the center slice with which you began for a finishing touch. Bake again following above instructions and cool.

Step 1 Making the Beads

With Super Slicer, slice remaining canes to 1/4" thickness, rolling cane with each slice to avoid flat spots. Lightly smooth edges and flatten. NOTE: You can make a means of flattening slices by making a simple tool from an additional tin. With slick surface glue, glue the dull side of freezer paper to the bottom of the tin. When dry, trim. Place cane slices on the center of the tin, (the shiny side of freezer paper should be showing). Gently apply pressure, flip slice over and repeat. This gives your slice a consistent thickness.

Step 2 Making the Beads

Using a Needle Tool, pierce through center. (You can wet the Needle Tool to keep it from sticking to clay). Lay sliced beads on typing paper or index cards. Bake and cool.

Step 3 Making the Beads

For filler beads, roll scrap clay, pierce and bake in bead tray. For added sheen and waterproofing, coat with Studio by Sculpey Glossy or Satin Glaze.

Step 1 Assembling the Kit

Print out Circular Instructions on card stock with computer printer. Cut out with scissors, or use a 3" Circle Punch. (Turn punch upside down so you can see where to punch).

Step 2 Assembling the Kit

Cut one blank 3" circle out of card stock or black paper. (You may want to sign this circle, or write a special note if it is a gift).

Step 3 Assembling the Kit

Glue circle to inside tin lid with slick surface glue. Be sure to air glue. Place beads, enough elastic for a necklace and bracelet or anklet-25" or so and instruction circle in tin. The amount of beads depends on the size of your finished beads. I always give extra. Use glass E beads as filler, make your own itty beads or both. Store finished jewelry in tin.
