Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Condition each of the clays individually starting with the lightest color (Translucent-White-Pearl-Gold)

Roll the Translucent, White, and Pearl clays into individual logs. Cut the White into three pieces. Cut the Pearl and Translucent into 2 pieces each. Roll each piece into a small log…keep separate.

Lay the three White logs next to each other. Lay one Pearl log on top of the White logs (in the space between 2 logs) and lay one Translucent log next to that one. Turn the stack over and repeat with the other 2 logs. This will give you a rounded group of logs.

Begin to marbleize the three colors: First twist the group (candy cane like).

Then roll the twist up (like a snail).

Next squish the snail.

Now roll the squished snail into a log again and repeat the above steps three more times until you have a nice blend of the colors. Roll this blend into a log about 3”-4” long. Give it a final twist (like a candy cane). Set aside.

Roll the Gold clay through your pasta machine on #1 (the widest setting). Wrap the log with this sheet.

Roll log to smooth seam.

Flatten log with the palm of your hand.

Roll lengthwise through the pasta machine on #1.

This will give you a long, skinny strip. Do not worry if the inside is showing (as in the photo). When the pieces are stacked it will not show as long as you lay the marbled part next to Gold.

Starting at one end of the strip cut across the length every 3”. Cut as many pieces as you can. If you would like more strips, cut 2” pieces instead of 3”. This will give you a fuller looking wing in the end.

Now begin to stack the pieces. If you want, bend a couple of pieces as you are stacking. Stack all of the pieces except 1 or 2.

Lay the last of the pieces across the top and down the side of the stack. This will become the top of your wing.

Taper the end across from the “top” giving your cane a teardrop shape. Press the top of the cane into the palm of your hand to compress and begin the reduction.

Slice off one end to see the results. You can cut this into 2 or three pieces, reducing each to a different size for use angel ornaments and pins. The cane can be left large for use on figurines.
