Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Using a 1/4 package of each color, create Skinner blends between the following colors: Turquoise and White; Wasabi and Spanish olive; Purple Pearl and White. To see how to do a Skinner Blend please go to: http://www.sculpey.com/how-tos/techniques/skinner-blend. Roll each blend into a spiral Skinner Blend cane.
Roll a small piece of both Black and White clay through the clay conditioning machine on a #3 setting. Cut the sheets into two equal sizes and stack them. Cut them in half and stack twice more to make a stripe cane.
Use a section of the Purple Pearl and White spiral cane as the center of the design. Reduce the Turquoise and White cane and divide it into three pieces the same length as the Purple Pearl/White cane. Begin to arrange a complex cane with these elements. Add sections of the Wasabi/Spanish Olive cane reduced and pressed in to a leaf shape. Add some slices of the Black and White stripe cane around the elements. Finally, fill all the background space with snakes of Sunshine. Press the cane into a square loaf.
Reduce the cane and cut into 4 equal pieces. Re-arrange the canes to form a new pattern. In the example, the background Yellow areas were put together and the colors began to form an undulating stripe. Reduce this cane to about 1/2-3/4” size.
Roll a sheet of Sunshine clay for a backing sheet. Cut thin slices of the cane and lay them on the backing sheet, butting the edges together. Arrange the pieces to emphasize the undulating stripe.
Using the acrylic roller, roll across the slices to blend the seams and smooth the surface. With the oval cutter, cut two earring shapes. With the round cutter, cut out two circles near the top of the earring pieces.
Using the needle tool, pierce the earring from the top of the earring through to the cut out circle.
Bake according to the directions above. Allow to cool completely.
Add an accent bead on a headpin and thread it through from the circle up to the top of the earring so that the bead is hanging in the center of the earring. Form a loop and attach to the ear wire. Repeat for the second earring.
