Why armature?

Skeletal armature strengthens and defines a sculpture. In the world of Sculpey it also saves you money.

Aluminum Foil (the cheap stuff, thinner is better) makes an excellent volume filler, thereby allowing you to use less clay. Which of course saves money. Let's use the case of a biped sculpture. You would start by making a wire skeleton for the arms, hands, body, legs, feet and head. It looks much like a stick figure. The aluminum foil is wrapped around the wire and molded into the shape of the muscles. Foil can only go so far as it is only so mold-able, but by applying the foil to the wire, you've created the rough volume of the figure. Sculpey is then applied as a skin and additional fine detail.

Your figure is very lightweight, but very strong.

A final benefit to this type of practice is being able to control the thickness across your sculpture. The more consistent the thickness the better the oven fire. We all want our work to be durable (accidents happen) and by best practices in product application along with light weight and strong armatures, your work will be as durable and strong as it is beautiful.

It's the little things!
