Sculpey® III Bud Vase

Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 °F for 15 minutes per 1/4 in thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult. Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through a clay dedicated pasta machine for several passes on the widest setting. Condition clay and run the White clay through the pasta machine on the thickest setting. Repeat this for the Lemonade clay as well. Make sure each of the clay sheets is as wide as the pasta machine rollers. Cut the sheets in half to make triangles and put one triangle of each color opposite of the other color forming a new sheet.

-Fold the White/Lemonade clay sheet in half so that the white corner touches the opposite white corner and the yellow corner touches the opposite yellow corner. Leading with the folded edge, press the folded sheet back through the pasta machine on the thickest setting. Keep folding the sheet and pressing it back through the machine at least 20 times or until the colors are blended all the way across. It is important during this step to always fold white corner to white corner and yellow corner to yellow corner.-Without folding the sheet, turn the sheet 90 degrees so that the yellow runs through the rollers first. Press the sheet through on the number 2 setting. Repeat without folding the sheet again on the number 3 setting. This will make the sheet very long and thin and the color blending even more gradual.

Starting on the yellow end of the sheet, roll the sheet completely up jelly roll style with the yellow in the middle and the white on the outside. This will be the middle of your flower. Reduce the middle to about 1/2" diameter by rolling it gently on your work surface. Set the cane aside.

-Using Sky Blue clay make a log about 1/2" diameter.-Roll the White clay through the pasta machine on the number 3 setting to make a thin sheet. Wrap one layer of white around the blue log to make a bulls eye.-Reduce the bulls eye cane by gently rolling it on the work surface until it is about 3/8" in diameter.

-Using the acrylic roller, gently roll the round cane flattening it on the top and bottom to turn it into an oval. Flip the cane over and roll the opposite side as well. -Using the Sculpey Super Slicer cut the cane in half so you have two square logs which look like 1/2 circles on the ends. These will be your flower petals.

-Cut about 2" of the Flower Center cane.-Cut six 2" pieces from the petal cane. If you do not have enough petal canes to make six pieces, you'll need to make another Petal cane following the Bulls Eye Cane instructions.-Arrange the petals around the flower center.

-With the remaining flower center cane, you can make the triangle shapes needed to fill in between the petals. Gently reduce the flower center cane to about 1/4" diameter.-Lay the cane on the surface in front of you and pinch up a top along the sides of it with your fingers. Turn the cane 1/3 turn and pinch up another point, and turn and repeat one more time so that the cane now has a triangle shape.

-Continue pinching the triangle cane smaller so that it fits between the petals. Cut 2" lengths of the triangle cane and put one length between every petal. -Gently reduce the flower cane to about 1" diameter by gently rolling it on the work surface in front of you

-From your flower cane, cut very thin slices - about 1/16" thick. -Starting at the bottom of the vase, apply the thin slices with sides touching all the way around the vase.Add a 2nd row above the first and continue adding rows until you have covered as much of the vase as desired. If there are small gaps between the slices, don't worry, these will be filled in during the next step.-Gently roll the bud vase around on your work surface to smooth the cane slices together. Trim away any excess clay that may have wrapped around the bottom of the vase.-Bake the entire vase according to manufacturer's instructions for the clay.
