Sculpey® III Birthday Hat

Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 °F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4â€ (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult. Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Using the Clay Conditioning Machine, roll out a 1/4 bar of each color of clay on the #5 setting. Bake each of the sheets and allow to cool. Once cooled, use the Hole Punch to punch out several dots of each color.

Create the hat shape by tracing the template provided onto scrapbooking paper. Cut the traced circle in half. One half circle will make one hat.

Fold the half circle in half, make a light crease to mark the center. At the center point cut out a little half circle, this will make folding the hat into a cone easier. Make a 1â€ fold on one side of the small cut out you just made. Wrap the paper around to form a cone. Use double sided tape on the creased edge to secure.

Glue the clay dots all over the hat. This is most easily achieved if you are using clear fast dry glue, because the dots won't move around as you handle the hat.

Staple the feather boa edge around the bottom of the hat and trim the end with scissors. To make the puff ball on top, cut off a 4" piece of feather boa. Loop it in half. Pinch the two loose ends between your thumb and forefinger. Push the loop up through the little hole at the top hat until you can pull some of the feathers through from the top. Pull out about 1" of the loop so it forms a little poof on the outside of the hat.
