Sculpey Premo™ Delicate Floral Slab Earrings

Getting Started: Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

First mix the color palette: 1/8 Bar of Beige plus 1/8 bar of White = Wheige for the background;
1/8 Bar of Orange plus 1/8 bar of White = Light Orange for the buds;
1/8 Bar of Turquoise plus 1/8 bar of Silver = Turquoise Silver for leaves;
1/8 Bar of Ultramarine Blue plus 1/8 bar of Silver = Blue Silver for stems;
1/4 Bar of Silver will be used for leaves as well.

Roll the Wheige to a sheet about 1/8” thick.
Roll all the other colors to a very thin sheet, about 1/16” thick. The Light Orange color doesn’t actually need to be in a sheet because we will use it to create little buds later.

From the Blue Silver cut out one large teardrop shape. Use the edge of the same cutter to divide the teardrop shape into very thin stems.

Place the stems randomly onto the Wheige background

Cut the Silver and the Silver Turquoise sheets into 1/8” strips. Then hold the blade at an angle and cut the strips into diamonds for leaves.

Use the Blunt Point Tool to pick up the little leaves and position them along the stems. As you push the leaves into place, the tool will create some shape to the leaves. I placed my Silver leaves along one side of the stem and the Blue Silver leaves along the other side of the stem.

Roll a skinny rope of Light Orange and cut off lots of same size buds with the Clay Blade. Position the buds randomly along the stems.

Poke holes in each of the buds with the Needle Tool.

Roll the remainder of the Blue Silver to a sheet 1/8” thick. Cut out two 1/25” teardrops. Then use the same cutter to trim away the bottom of the teardrops so that they are much smaller.

Audition the earring pieces to decide how you would like to assemble them.

I decided on this orientation with the tips of the teardrops pointing toward each other.

Poke holes using the Needle Tool or the Blunt Point Tool so that the pieces can be assembled later with jump rings.

Bake the pieces following the directions in Step 1 above.

When the pieces are completely cool, assemble with jump rings as shown. Glue ear posts to the backs of the top pieces and allow to dry completely.
