Sculpey Soufflé™ Silkscreened Journal Nameplate

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Sheet out about 1/2 block of conditioned Soufflé Poppy Seed on a medium setting on the clay machine. You can also use an acrylic roller to roll out a small sheet of the Poppy Seed. Mine is about 1/8 inch thick.

Position your silkscreen on the clay and apply your paint quickly with your scraper. NOTE: My silkscreen had a place for the name to be written. If your screen doesn’t have this, just leave a space while you are applying your paint.

Step 3

Quickly remove the silkscreen and go wash it under running water immediately. Your paint will be almost dry by the time you have washed and removed the excess water (I like to use those microfiber towels on my screens).

Step 4

Once the paint has dried completely, you can trim your clay to the size you wish for your name panel. I like to use graphing paper to help me cut the lines straight! (You are not seeing things, this photo shows the same silkscreen with silver paint – I like to have OPTIONS!)

ARTIST TIP: I like to gently round the corners of my clay by just clipping the corner with my blade and then using my thumbnail to smooth the clip.

Bake the clay according to the directions in Step 1 above.

Step 5

After my clay piece was baked and cooled, I decided to add a bit of color using the Archer & Olive watercolor set. The watercolor was perfect to add a little bit of drama to the shooting stars!

Step 6

I found that one of the Archer & Olive paint pens was a close match to the water color I had used, so I used the pen to write my name in the space.

All that was left to do was attach the name plate to the journal elastic. I elected to use a Superglue Gel to attach the name plate at the top and bottom of the plate.
