Hand
Colored "Tile" Frame
|
|
Materials:
- Two (2) 2-oz
bars of Premo! Sculpey in Pearl 5101
NOTE: A touch of Alizarin crimson 5383 or Cobalt Blue 5063
may be mixed with Pearl to create a pale pink or pale blue if desired.
- Deeply cut
rubber stamps with flower motifs (Hero Arts or All Night Media)
- Kemper square
cutter (7/8")
- Sakura Gelly
Roll (metallic colors) pens (medium points are best)
-
Acrylic
frame base
- Surebonder
(FPC Corporation) Glue Gel
- Sculpey Super
Slicer blade
Directions:
- Condition
the Pearl clay until soft and pliable. Roll through pasta machine
on a #3 setting or roll with brayer to 1/8" thickness.
- On a piece
of white 8-1/2x11 paper, trace around the acrylic frame, using it
as a guide.
- With the Sculpey
Super Slicer, cut strips of clay the length and width of the frame.
(Make the strips a fraction of an inch narrower than the size of
the "tiles" punched out with the square Kemper cutter. )
- Lay the strips
of clay on the white paper. Press the edges together, making certain
that the frame base remains rectangular.
- Take floral
rubber stamps and stamp randomly on the clay.
- Carefully
"punch out" rubber stamped tiles with the Kemper cutter. Re-roll
the Pearl clay as necessary.
-
You
will need about 24 tiles for a 5 x 7" frame.
- Carefully
lay the tiles over the frame base, leaving a space for "grout" between
the tiles. You may have to reposition several times to get a good
fit that is accurately spaced.
- When all tiles
are accurately spaced, press the tiles into place over the clay
base.
- If you have
not tinted the Pearl Premo used for the tiles, tint the grout. You
may use any color you wish.
NOTE: It will only take a tiny amount of colored clay to
give the Pearl Premo some tint. If your tint is too light, add tiny
additions until the tint you wish is reached.
- Roll small
snakes of the grout clay. Cut pieces the length of the tiles.
- Press the
grout into the spaces and smooth into place. You may want to trim
with the Sculpey Super Slicer.
- Bake the frame
base (with tiles) at 275 degrees F (130 degrees C) for 30 minutes.
Let cool completely.
- When tiled
frame is completely cool, hand color the impressed flowers with
the metallic Sakura Gelly Roll pens.
- Re-bake the
frame for 5 minutes at 275 degrees F (130 degrees C) for 4 minutes
to heat set the ink.
- When frame
is cool, use the Surebonder Glue Gel to glue it to the acrylic frame.
(Surebonder will not etch the acrylic frame and turn it white. Let
it dry for at least 1 hour before inserting picture.)
