Sculpey III "Potpourri" Heart Picture Frame

Materials:

Sculpey III in the following colors:

  • Lavender 312
  • Mint 523 (2 packages)
  • Wilton Heart Cutters 509-248 (3") and 509-249 (5")
  • Roller or pasta machine
  • Knead and condition ½ package of Mint Sculpey III. Roll with pasta machine or brayer to 1/8" thickness.
  • Using the larger heart cutter, impress clay and peel away excess, leaving 5" heart shape.
  • Place the 3" heart cutter evenly over the large heart shape. Press carefully, and remove the inner shape, leaving a heart frame.
  • Make bullseye, jellyroll, and checkerboard canes using the Lavender and Mint clays.
  • Reduce the canes slightly; if the clay becomes too soft, place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes until it becomes firm.
  • Randomly place cane slices around the perimeter of the frame. There is no need to be too worried about symmetry, this is supposed to look like a "potpourri" of shapes and textures.
  • Make two ¼" snakes of the contrasting colors. Twist and entwine the snakes into a candy cane twist. Continue twisting and lengthening the snakes until they are 1/8" in diameter.
  • Curl and coil pieces of the thin, striped snake on top of the cane slices in a random pattern.
  • Bake the embellished frame at 275 degrees F (135 degrees C) for 20 minutes.
  • Frame may be glazed with a light coat of Sculpey glaze if desired.
  • Affix heart frame to a 5" square acrylic frame (with built in support ), and insert appropriately sized portrait into slot.
