Kool Key
Design by Margi Laurin |
Materials:
- Premo! Sculpey in 3-4 colors of your
choice: contrasting colors work well for the simple canes that will
be constructed.
- A roller or pasta machine
- A blade or tissue slicer
- Masking tape or marker
- 1 yard of cord (leather, hemp, vinyl,
etc.)
Directions:
- First, insert the key into the lock,
and mark with masking tape or marker the point where the clay decoration
must end so key works properly.
- Next, take some clay (could be scrap
play from previous projects) or about ¼ of a 2 oz. block. Condition
the clay, and shape by hand into a fat rectangular shape, approximately
the size shown below.

- Insert the key into the rectangular
piece of clay. If it becomes misshapen, warm the clay with your
hands and reshape it gently back into the rectangular shape. Try
to squeeze the clay around the key so it will not slip out.

- Make some simple canes, such as the
pinwheel shown below in two contrasting colors. Roll the clay sheets
1/8" thick and stack one atop the other. With the blade, straighten
the edges, and taper cut one end of the stack.
- Roll it jellyroll style and let rest
before slicing.

- Bullseye canes consist of wrapping
a colored center with one or more sheets of a contrasting color.
Be certain to carefully "butt" the seam, as shown below.

- Take very thin slices of the assorted
canes and press onto the surface of the key. Smooth with a roller
or your fingers. Take a needle or skewer and twist a hole through
the keys original hole.

- Bake the key at 275° F (135° C) for
30 minutes. When cool, thread cord through hole. Extra beads may
be added. Tie the ends securely and hang around neck!
