Wooden Wascals

Design by Marie Redmond

This project not only creates a cute Easter decoration but it could also be used to hold 'nametags' for Easter dinner. It all depends on how you bend his arms.

Materials and Tools:

Premo Clay:

  • 2 oz. Block Ecru or your choice of colour.
  • 1/4 block orange for carrot
  • Small amount of green for leaves
  • White and red to create pink for ears, nose and pads
  • Black....small amount for eyes
  • White...for eyes and teeth
  • Wooden Dowel 7/8" in diameter, cut to 4" length for 'standing' Wascal
  • 1" Round cookie or spring loaded cutter
  • Fishing line for whiskers
  • Straw Hat from Craft store or dollar store
  • Acrylic paint for body colour
  • Weldbond glue and glue gun
  • Recess Smoother Tool or Needle tool for fur
  • Ball Tool
  • Small amount of scrap clay

Directions:

Step 1 - Dowel

  • Paint dowel whatever colour you prefer.
  • You could go with traditional colours or something pastel would be fun.

Step 2 - Face & Muzzle

  • Roll ecru clay through pasta machine on thickest setting. Using circle cutter, cut out face shape. Add small amount of Weldbond and apply circle near top of dowel. Smooth out edges.
  • Roll 2 x 1/2" balls of clay and form teardrops for muzzle. Apply halfway down face.
  • Mix some white with a bit of red to make a nice warm pink colour.
  • Using a pea size ball of pink, form into triangle for nose. Use tool to make nostrils.

  • Using the straight edge of the Recess Smoother tool (or needle tool), scratch in fur starting at outer edge and working inwards.

  • Cut 6 pieces of fishing line for whiskers and push into clay. Trim if required.

Step 3 - Teeth and Chin

  • Roll small amount of white clay through pasta machine and using sharp tool cut out upper and lower teeth. Carefully slip them under muzzle and press into place.
  • Roll a small amount of the Ecru (3/8" ball) clay between your fingers to form chin.
  • Apply under chin. Scratch in fur on chin.

Step 4 - Eyes

  • Flatten 2 small circles of white clay and add tiny balls of black to form eyes.
  • With fingers, shape 2 x 1/4" pieces of Ecru clay into half moon shapes. Apply these halfway down eyes to form eyelids. Scratch in fur on eyelids.

Step 5 - Tummy

  • Using sharp tool, cut out egg shape from Ecru (or white) clay. Apply small amount of Weldbond to one side and apply to dowel under chin. Scratch in fur on chest.

Step 6 - Carrot

  • Form orange clay into carrot shape. Draw horizontal lines across with needle tool to make it more realistic. Create leaves with green Premo and add to top of carrot.
  • Make sure that you press them on securely.

Step 7 and 8 - Front Paws and Feet

Paws:

  • With hands, roll out 2 x 7/8" balls of Ecru clay into 1/2" wide snakes about 2" long.
  • Using needle tool cut into clay to form toes.
  • Apply small dots of pink clay to undersides of paws to create 'pads'.
  • Scratch in fur marks.
  • To 'opposite' end of paws add a small drop of Weldbond glue and press onto dowel at appropriate location.
  • At this point you can decide if you want a 'waving' rabbit or not. Shape paws into place. Add carrot if desired.

Feet:

  • Shape 2 x 7/8" balls of clay into rectangles approx. 1/4" thick by 1 1/2" long by 1/2" wide. Using needle tool form toes. Scratch in fur lines and add 'pink pads'.
  • Secure feet onto bottom of dowel with a little Weldbond. Make sure that your bunny is level so he doesn't fall on his face.

Stap 9 - Hat and Ears

  • Push small amount of 'scrap' clay into hat. This will give you something to apply hot glue to when attaching to dowel.
  • Shape Ears as shown (2 x 3/4" ball of clay) adding small amount of pink to the inside of each ear. Scratch in fur.

  • Press ears onto hat, securing with a little Weldbond. Let dry.
  • Please note: You may need to use a 'glue gun' to securely attach ears after baking.

Step 10 - Tail

  • Take a 5/8" ball of clay and shape into a tail. Texture with ball tool to fluff up.
  • Attach, using Weldbond, to back of dowel.
  • Baking: Preheat oven to 275 F. and bake for 30 minutes. Cool.

This project would work great using any of the Granitex colours as well.

Happy Easter from MARIE!!!!
