Materials you’ll need:
- Sculpey III in these colors:
- White (approx. 1/2 block)
- Black (small pea-sized piece)
- Round toothpick
- Plastic knife or other tool to divide clay
- Oven set to bake reliably at 275 degrees, use an oven thermometer to assure accuracy
- Disposable aluminum pie-or-baking pan
- Oven mitt to remove pan from oven
- Scissors to cut ribbon or satin cording
- Ruler to measure ribbon or cording
Directions
STEP 1. Divide the white clay at the halfway line, then cut again-you’ll have one large piece and two smaller pieces. Set the largest piece aside.

STEP 2. Divide one of the remaining two pieces in half again as shown- and then divide that half in half again- (see picture). We will only use the one largest piece (ghost’s body) and the two smallest pieces-(ghost’s arms) for now, so set the medium-sized piece aside.

STEP 3. Knead the large white piece of clay until it’s soft. Roll one large ball, and two smaller balls. Pinch off two tiny pieces of clay from the medium-sized piece of clay you set aside, and shape them into two very small balls for the ghost’s eyes. Set these two tiny white balls aside for now, we will use them later.

STEP 4. Shape the largest white ball into a round-topped cylinder. This will be the ghost’s body. Shape the medium-sized balls into round-topped cones. These will be the ghost’s arms.

STEP 5. Flatten the ghost’s body into a rounded comma shape.

STEP 6. Flatten the ghost’s arms and press the skinny ends under the ghost’s body.

STEP 7. Retrieve the two tiny white balls and press them towards the top middle of the ghost’s face as shown. Make two very teeny black balls for pupils; press them on the tops of the eyes.

STEP 8. Mix a tiny amount of black and a tiny amount of white clay together until it turns gray. Shape a small snake of clay as shown.Press this at the top of the ghost’s eyes for eyelids.

STEP 10. Use the toothpick to press a small indentation between the eyes.

STEP 11. Use the tip of the toothpick to draw in a squiggly mouth.

STEP12. Use the toothpick to make a hole in the top of the ghost’s head as shown.

STEP 13. Press the side of the toothpick into each end of the ghost’s hands to make a thumb. If desired, pinch and reshape the ghost’s tail so it looks as if it’s trailing out behind him.

Bake the ghost at 275 degrees F on the disposable aluminum pan for 30 minutes. Use an oven thermometer to assure accurate temperature. Remove from oven using an oven mitt, and allow to cool before handling. String a black, orange, or green ribbon through the hole appropriate to the length of the project you chose- be sure to cut the ribbon long enough to tie around a pumpkin stem, (about 10 inches), a Halloween gift decoration, (about 12 inches), or to use as a decoration on a candy bag (your call). You can even use satin cording and make him a necklace- (16-24 inches). |
