Description
A fun gift idea
for any special occasion - this one is for Mother's Day - that can be made using a simple jar.
Materials
- A small clean
glass jar with a metal lid (small relish, baby food, jelly jars
work well)
- Sculpey
- Distilled
water
- Glitter and
confetti (not paper)
Scope and Sequence
Step 1 - After
deciding what your snow globe is going to look like, start by sculpting
what goes inside the jar. Build a mound into the lid in the jar. Twist
the lid onto the glass jar to force the Sculpey to fit. If the Sculpey
mound gets stuck in the jar, next time wet the jar before twisting
it in. Sculpt the figures for whatever you want onto the mound in
the lid.

Step 2 - Build
a "skirt" around the outside of the lid. Make sure the space where
the rim of the jar goes stays clear.

The skirt is a
great place to write Happy Mother's Day. To make the cursive writing
used in the example, roll out very skinny snakes and press them a
bit at a time to form each letter. To make the flowers, roll tiny
balls of clay and press 5 or 6 around a center.

Step 3 - When
all the sculpting is finished, bake the clay wrapped lid according
to package directions. Do not bake with the jar on, because it will
stop the inside part from baking thoroughly.
Step 4 - When
cooled, fill the glass jar with distilled water, and add confetti
and glitter. Close jar tightly. Shake it up and see a great gift for
mom!

Notes - If the
inside mound or outside skirt comes loose from the lid, it can be
glued with a waterproof glue, like epoxy or hot glue. You can also
glue the lid and jar together when finished to make it last longer.
Remember that Sculpey can sag when baked, so don't make anything too
tall and narrow.
