OLD GLORY MINI BANNER PIN & RIBBON PIN
Design by Kris Richards

Materials:

  • 1/2 package each: (makes about 4 flags!) Sculpey III or Premo! Sculpey polymer clay
    • Red 083 or Cadmium RedHue 5382
    • White 001 or White 5001
    • Blue 063 or Ultramarine Blue 5562
  • Pasta machine (artist used an ATLAS brand)
  • Sculpey Super Slicer clay blade or tissue blade for cutting cane slices
  • Kemper star cutter: size of choice
  • Kemper square cutter size of choice
  • Oven set to bake reliably at 275 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Clean old baking pan, cookie pan, or doubled foil sheet, lined with index cards
  • Pin back
  • Super glue

Directions:

  • Run 1/2 piece of red and 1/2 piece of white clay separately through the number 2 setting of an Atlas pasta machine several times to condition the clay. When rolling through the last time, roll into an elongated rectangle. Stack the white on top of the red clay, and use a small brayer to roll the clay stack eliminating any bubbles.

  • Trim the clay stack with the clay blade until you have a long rectangle.

  • Cut the rectangle in half width-ways, and stack them on top of one another, creating a thick slab of red and white striped clay. Repeat the process, and trim any uneven edges with the clay blade. Slice a 1/4 inch thick piece of one of the short ends of the stacked slab.

  • Notch one short end into an inverted "V" shape using the clay blade.

  • Thin a piece of blue clay on setting number 5 on the Atlas pasta machine. Use the square Kemper cutter to cut a piece from the blue clay.

  • Press the blue diamond on top of the red and white striped ribbon.

  • Use the clay blade to trim the top edges even with the blue diamond.

  • Thin a piece of white clay to setting 6. Use the star Kemper cutter to cut a single star. Press it in the center of the blue diamond.

  • If desired, add a backing piece of either red or blue clay (flattened in Atlas at setting 5). Cut around the banner shape with clay tool approximately 1/8 inch to the outside. Make several if you wish, and bake on the baking sheet at 275 for 30 minutes, remove to cool, add pin back using super glue.

For Old Glory Ribbon Pin:

Follow all directions above, except:

  • Cut two thin ribbons of the red and white striped clay by dividing them in half lengthwise. Stack one of the ribbons on top of the other, press to adhere the two ribbons of clay well together.

  • Notch each end of the two ribbons using the pointed end of the square Kemper tool.

  • Mount on blue or red backing. Bake as directed above, add pin back once cooled using super glue.
