Elegant Napkin Rings
Design by Juan and Kathryn Cukier

Materials:

  • Select Premo! Sculpey in home décor colors to match or contrast with table linens. Suggestions are:
    • Metallics
    • Pearlescents
    • Skinner blends between gold and green pearl, gold and red pearl, gold and blue pearl, copper and alizarin crimson, etc.
  • Simple bullseye, checkerboard, and spiral canes in personal color choices. Pinch parts of these canes into triangle shapes, and leave others round or square. Black and white "combined" canes make another possibility. See Flower Cane instructions here on the website.
  • 2 inch lengths of PVC pipe couplings with a ¾" to 1" opening. These couplings are heavy and shiny, not thin like the lengths of piping, almost like Bakelite. Choose as many napkin ring holders for the amount of the table settings. These couplings are usually about $.50 apiece.
  • Gold or copper leaf, Pearl Ex Powders
  • Rubber stamps for texture, if desired
  • Extra embellishments such as wood, glass beads, paints, etc.

Instructions:

  • Slice your canes and begin layering small pieces over the surface of the PVC pipe pieces.
  • Gently roll the PVC piece on a smooth surface to join the pieces together. Now you have the base color/design for your napkin ring holders.
  • You may also marble pearlescent and metallic clays together and cover the PVC pipe, smoothing the seam by rolling and pressing with fingers.
  • Rubber stamp embellishment pieces and carefully cut out with an X-Acto knife. Layer onto the clay base, pressing so it adheres. Bring out the design of the rubber stamp by carefully applying PearlEx pigments lightly with your finger.
  • Layer on additional embellishment carefully, keeping in mind that they may also need to be glued after the baking process. Some materials may not fire well, such as feathers, sequins, etc., so add them after the baking process.
  • Any paints will be applied after firing.
  • Bake the napkin rings at 275 degrees F (130 degrees C) for 30 minutes per ¼" of thickness, including clay embellishments.
  • Let cool completely.
  • Glaze napkin rings with Sculpey acrylic glaze or Flecto Diamond Varathane glaze.
  • Set your table and watch your guests gasp in amazement!!!!
