Directions:
Note:
Mokume gane is
an ancient Japanese metal working technique. There are many ways to
do mokume gane with polymer clay, and many uses for the shaved pieces.
This technique, however, is easy for the beginner to master, and many
effects can be obtained depending on what colors you use. (This is
an economical use of clay and scraps as well.)
Here we are using
metallics to also obtain the holographic effect (to a degree) described
in another project called "Ghost
Images."
Preparing sheets of clay:
- Condition each color of clay and roll
out onto a #4 setting on pasta machine or roughly 1/16" thick.
- Stack colors with copper on bottom,
black in the middle, silver on top. Press sheets together.

- Roll entire sheet through pasta machine
on a #1 setting. Cut stack in half and stack again.
- Roll re-assembled sheet through on
a #1 setting.

Stamping the design into clay:
- Mist rubber stamp with a fine mist
of water. Press design deeply into stack of clay, exerting even
force. Remove stamp.

- Adhere stack of clay to a ceramic
tile or sheet of glass so that it doesn't easily move.
Shaving the clay design:
- Your stamped design has high and low
spots. You want to shave off the high spots with your Sculpey Super
Slicer. Hold each end of the blade and shave horizontally. Take
your time.
