Focus:
This project can be used in conjunction with lessons on shape and
color. It utilizes basic geometric shapes (or parts of shapes) - circle,
rectangle, square, triangle, oval, plus heart and star - to form simple,
layered designs. These cut out designs can be painted, assembled and
made into pins or magnets.
Instructions:
- Select design(s)
from Sheet A and/or Sheet
C.
- Find corresponding
diagrams from Sheet B and/or
Sheet D.
- Roll Sculpey
out flat on paper surface to l/8" even thickness.
- Place pattern
on clay. With sharp tool or pen, trace around each separate pattern
shape on the paper (indicated by dotted lines). Remove design sheet
and cut around edges of clay shape with a knife or toothpick. Smooth
edges with tool or finger before placing on baking sheet. Edges
can also be sanded after baking, to smooth more evenly.
- Bake clay
pieces on glass baking pan, or on index cards or bakers' parchment
if using a metal pan. Direct contact with metal can cause scorching.
Leave in oven for l5 minutes at 275°F., but check frequently so
pieces don't overbake and darken. Do not underbake either, as clay
will be weak and could break easily.
- Select colors
for painting. Use liquid, waterbase acrylic paints. Paint each piece
separately. Let dry. Assemble and glue with heavy, white craft glue.
- When pieces
are complete, choose whether they will be used as pins or as magnets.
Instructor should glue pin backs or magnets on completed pieces
with silicone glue (Goop, E-6000, etc.)
