Chunky Channels

Premo! Sculpey becomes the perfect transfer palette for these great textures found in Photoshop!

Materials:

  • 4-6 oz of Gold Premo! Sculpey polymer clay
  • Clay dedicated pasta machine or roller
  • Sculpey Super Slicer blade
  • Toner-based transfers
  • Rubbing alcohol, cotton balls
  • 2 bamboo skewers
  • 1 poultry needle
  • 1mm beading elastic

Directions:

1. Roll out half your clay out on the widest setting of the pasta machine. You want to create a sheet of clay that is at least 3 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches long or ½ inches longer and wider than your desired finished size.

2. Place your two bamboo skewers so that they are positioned evenly on the clay and press them into the clay. I find that a glue bottle will run along the skewers and press them in nicely!

3. Remove the skewers and drag the blunt end of a skewer through the two channels to make sure that they are evenly impressed. Set this sheet of clay aside.

4. Roll out the other half of your clay and then turn the pasta machine down 2 setting to a thinner setting and roll through again. Remember, you are aiming for a piece of clay that is ½ inch wider and ½ inch longer than your final size.

5. Place the transfer face down on this sheet of clay and apply your rubbing alcohol with a cotton ball, soaking the ENTIRE piece of paper as quickly as you can. (Wet even the white edges of the paper so they won't pull up). Run the paper lightly with your finger to remove any visible air bubbles.

6. Once the alcohol has evaporated, resoak the transfer again. Repeat once more and then peel up a corner of the transfer and check it. If your ink has transferred, SLOWLY peel the paper up watching to make sure that your transfer is complete on the entire image. If you see a spot that didn't transfer, lay the paper back down, resoak that area and lightly rub with your finger. Continue to remove the paper.

7. Trim the ends of the transferred sheet of clay to the edge of the transfer.

8. Lay this sheet on top of the channel sheet of clay being careful to center the channels on each end (this is why we trim the ends of the transfer sheet!).

9. Trim the top and bottom edges - either in a straight edge or a curving edge (my favorite!)

10. Cut your sheet into beads - once again either cutting even pieces or random curved pieces. You can even cut the corners off to create another pattern.

11. Use your poultry needle as a bead drill to clear your channels. Don't get your beads out of order!

12. Bake as directed on the clay package.

13. Thread one length of the elastic through the upper channels.

14. Thread the second length through the bottom channels.

15. Tie a double knot and trim the elastic.

16. Put a light coat of sealant on your bracelet to protect the transfer. I recommend the Pearl Ex Varnish or Sculpey Glaze. Heat both with a heat gun for a moment or two to harden them.

Creating the textures in Photoshop:

1. Open a new file that is 10x4 inches and 150 dpi.

2. One the Layers Palette, double click on the word Background and rename the layer Layer 0.

3. In the very bottom left corner of the Layer Palette is a little symbol that looks like a cursive "f" - this is the Layer Style button. Click on it and select Pattern Overlay.

4. Hit your "D" button to reset your color palette to Black on top and white on bottom.

5. Scroll through your patterns and select an interesting one! Remember that you can add to your default patterns by clicking on the flyout arrow in the upper right corner of the pattern selecter! Once you select another set, you will get a window that asks if you want to replace or append your default. Select append.
