Christmas Nativity Set - Part 2

Mary


Sculpey III in the following colors:

  • Tan 301
  • Ivory 501
  • Leaf Green 322
  • Navy 363
  • Chocolate 053
  • Beige 093 Super Sculpey
  • Head Covering:
    • Flatten a sheet of navy clay to 1/16” thick. Cut a rectangle 2.25” x 1.25”.
    • Place over Mary’s head, letting the ends meet at the chest and fold down the back of her body.
    • Fold the sides behind per the picture.
  • Trim:
    • Flatten some chocolate clay to 1/16” thick.
    • Flatten some tan clay to 1/8” thick.
    • Lay tan sheet between two sheets of chocolate clay. Flatten to 1/8” thick.
    • Cut a thin strip and wrap around the base of Mary’s robe. Trim off excess in back.
    • Cut another thin slice and add to the front edge of Mary’s head covering, trimming off excess at the ends.
  • Hair: roll 3 balls of brown clay into teardrop shapes 3/8” long. Twist to curl and press gently onto Mary’s forehead.


Joseph

Sculpey III in the following colors:

  • Tan 301
  • Leaf Green 322
  • Navy 363
  • Chocolate 053
  • Black 042 Super Sculpey
  • Robe:
    • Roll a log of leaf green clay into a log 3” long. Flatten slightly.
    • Roll two 1/8” logs of leaf green clay, and press onto the sides of the large log.
    • Cut a 1” piece and add to the front of Joseph.
    • Cut another section 2” long and wrap around the shoulders, trimming off the excess in the back.
  • Beard:
    • Roll a 3/8” ball of brown clay into a worm shape 1” long. Bend to make a smile shape. Add to chin, pressing firmly to attach ends of the beard to the face.
  • Moustache: Cut a 1/8” ball of clay in half. Roll into teardrop shapes and press onto face, just above the beard with the pointed ends out.
  • Head covering:
    • Blend equal parts tan and chocolate clay to make a light brown mixture.
    • Flatten some tan, leaf green, black, navy and the light brown mixture into sheets 1/8” thick.
    • Cut strips of each color.
    • Flatten another tan sheet to 1/8” thick. Lay the strips of colored clay, alternating colors onto the sheet of tan clay, letting the edhes of the strips tough.
    • Flatten gradually to 1/16” thick with the pasta machine or a brayer.
    • Cut a rectangle 3.25” x 1.25”. Place over Joseph’s head with the edges just above the eyes and fold down the back of his body. Fold the sides under and bend ends over his shoulders.

 

Baby Jesus

Sculpey III in the following colors:

  • Chocolate 053
  • Yellow 072
  • Tan 301
  • Ivory 501 Super Sculpey

Materials:

  • Flat Toothpicks
  • Small black seedbeads
  • Blush or pink chalk
  • Manger:
    • Roll a log of Chocolate clay 7/16” thick.
    • Add texture with the end of a round toothpick.
    • Cut 5 pieces 3/8” long each; press sides together to make the legs.
    • Flatten another piece to 1/8” thick and cut a rectangle measuring 1” x 5/8”.
    • Press rectangle onto tops of legs. Add texture to sides.
  • Straw:
    • Mix equal parts yellow and tan clay. Roll a ¼” log of yellow mixture.
    • Flatten slightly and wrap around the top edges of the manger.
    • Use the end of a round toothpick to add the texture lines to the straw.
  • Body:
    • Roll a 3/8” ball of Super Sculpey into a teardrop shape ½” long.
    • Break a flat toothpick into thirds and press one piece into the pointed end of the body leaving ½ exposed.
  • Head:
    • Roll a ¼” ball of Super Sculpey.
    • Cut a tiny 1/16” ball of Super Sculpey in half. Roll into an oval shape.
    • Eyes: Using the end of a round toothpick, press small seed beads into face just above nose. Add eyelashes with the end of the toothpick.
    • Ears: Roll two 1/16” balls of Super Sculpey into oval shapes and press onto the sides of the head. Indent with end of paintbrush.
    • Blush cheeks and nose. Press head onto the pointed end of the body.
    • Blanket: Flatten some ivory Sculpey to 1/16” thick. Cut a 1.25” square. Use the end of the knife to add stitches 1/8” from the edges of one corner.
    • Place the baby with the head ¼” from the corner with the stitches. Fold the bottom corner of the blanket onto the body. Fold the other corners across the baby’s body. Add stitches to all exposed edges. Press gently onto top of manger.

 

Angel

Sculpey III in the following colors:

  • Pearl 1101
  • Tan 301 Super Sculpey

Materials:

  • Gold Acrylic Paint
  • Powdered blush or chalk
  • Gold Rocaille beads
  • Seed beads
  • 16 gauge gold colored wire
  • Flat Toothpick
  • ¾” sheer ivory ribbon
  • Hair:
    • Roll a 3/8” ball of tan clay into a pear shape 1” long. Flatten to 1/8” thick. Add to one side of the head, with the large end at the bottom.
    • Roll a ½” ball of tan clay into a pear shape 1.25” long and add to the other side of the head, letting the small ends tough on the top of the head and pressing the rest down onto the shoulder.
    • Roll another ½” ball of tan clay into a tear drop shape ¾” long, and press onto the back of the head, covering the rest of the head. Use fingers to smooth the seas.
    • Roll two 1/8” balls of clay into teardrop shapes 5/16” long. Add to the front of the head with the pointed ends to the side. Use the end of a round toothpick to add the texture lines to the hair.
  • Halo:
    • Cut a 3” piece of wire. String 15 or 16 gold seed beads onto it.
    • Bend the wire until the end beads touch and there are no spaces.
    • Twist the wires tightly to the ends. Trim all but 5/8” of twisted wire.
    • Press wire into the top of the head, near the back until only ¼” of wire is showing.
    • Bend the halo so that it is parallel with the top of the head.
  • Wings:
    • Tie a bow with the sheer ribbon (1” loops and 1” ends).
    • Hot glue to the back of the angel, just under the hair line.
  • Trim:
    • Use a round toothpick to add the Gold details to the sleeves and bottom of the robe with the gold acrylic paint.
  • Eyepin: Before baking, insert an eyepin into back of angel between “shoulders.” This will allow angel to be suspended from a stand so she will appear to be flying or hovering in the air above the stable.
  • Suspension of angel:
    • Create a stand out of a piece of clay with a weight in it (heavy nut).
    • Create hook at end of wire that will allow angel to be hung from the eyepin.
    • Suspend angel on long piece of heavy gauge gold wire that is inserted into the clay base. Angel will appear to “hover” in sky.

 

Shepherd with lamb

Sculpey III in the following colors:

  • Tan 301
  • Leaf Green 322
  • White 001 Super Sculpey

Materials:

  • Black seed beads
  • Pink Powdered blush
  • Flat toothpicks
  • Arms will be bent to 90 degrees.
  • Sheep’s Body:
    • Roll a 3/8” ball of white clay into an oval shape.
    • Press onto the front of the shepherd’s body. Texture with toothpick to dot the body.
    • Press the hands onto the bottom of the sheep’s body.
    • Break flat toothpick into quarters. Press one piece into one end of body, leaving ½ exposed.
  • Sheep’s head:
    • Roll a ¼” ball of white clay into an oval shape. Pinch one side slightly.
    • Use the end of a round toothpick to add the lines and seed beads to the head (for eyes).
    • For ears, roll a 1/8” ball of white clay into a worm shape ¼” long with pointed ends. Bend until ends touch. Add to one side of head. Repeat for other ear.
    • Add head to exposed toothpick at the end of the body.
  • Head Covering:
    • Flatten 1/6 cube of leaf green clay to 1/8” thick.
    • Cut a rectangle 2” x 1”. Place over head, centered just above eyes and fold down back of body.
    • Fold the sides under and fold the ends down over shoulders.

 

Shepherd with Staff

Sculpey III in the following colors:

  • Tan 301
  • Chocolate 053 Super Sculpey

Materials:

  • Black Seed Beads
  • Pink powdered blush or chalk
  • Flat Toothpicks
  • Green crochet thread
  • Staff:
    • Break 1/3 off of a flat toothpick. Wrap with Chocolate clay and roll on the tray until 3/16” thick and smooth.
    • Trim the ends 1/8” past each end of the toothpick.
    • Use the end of the round toothpick to add the texture to the staff. Press to side of Shepherd with the bent arm. Let hand touch staff.
  • For the beard:
    • Roll a 3/8” ball of chocolate clay into a teardrop shape 5/8” long.
    • Cut in half and press cut side of pointed end onto the chin.
    • For the moustache, cut a 1/8” ball of Chocolate in half and roll each piece into a teardrop shape 1/8” log. Add to the top of the beard with the pointed ends out.
    • Press head onto toothpick at top of body.
    • For ears, cut a 1/8” ball of Super Sculpey in half and roll into ovals. Flatten slightly and press onto sides of head. Use end of a paintbrush to indent ears.
    • Roll a 1/16” log of Chocolate clay. Cut two 1/8” sections, bend and press onto head above ears for “fringe.” Use a dry brush to blush the top of the “bald” head.
  • Feet and sandals:
    • Roll two ¼” balls of tan clay into ovals and flatten to 1/16” thick. Roll two 3/8” balls of Super Sculpey into oval shapes and flatten to 1/8” thick.
    • Use end of round toothpick to make the lines in the end of each oval for toes. Lay on top of flattened tan clay.
    • For straps: Flatten some tan clay to 1/16” thick. Cut a strip 1/16” wide and cut two 3/8” sections. Lay across toes, trimming excess.
    • Break a flat toothpick into quarters, and press into the tops of the feet, near back.
    • Press the body onto the toothpicks until they meet securely.


1st Wise Man Navy/Green (with bottle)

Sculpey III in the following colors:

  • Yellow 072
  • White 001
  • Navy 363
  • Pearl 1101
  • Green 022 Super Sculpey

Materials:

  • Flat toothpicks
  • Black Seed Beads
  • Pearl Seed Beads
  • Green and Red Rocaille Beads
  • 1/8” glass rhinestone
  • Fine glitter
  • Bottle:
    • Mix a ¾” ball of Yellow clay, a ¼” ball of tan clay, and a pinch of fine glitter until blended.
    • Roll a 3/8” ball of this yellow mixture and flatten slightly to ¼” thick.
    • Roll two 1/8” balls of the yellow mixture. Flatten one ball slightly, and add to the top of the bottle. Flatten the other ball to 1/16” thick and press gently onto the bottom of the bottle.
    • Using a round toothpick, add the pearl seed beads to the side of the bottle.
    • Draw lines/details onto the top and sides of bottle. Set aside.
  • Stripes:
    • Blend equal parts green and pearl clay (1” ball of each).
    • Flatten some Navy and the above green mixture into sheets 1/8” thick. Cut 1/8” strips of each color.
    • Flatten another sheet of Navy clay to 1/8” thick. Lay the strips of clay, alternating colors on the sheet and letting the edges of the strips touch. Flatten gradually to 1/16” thick.
    • Cut a rectangle 1.25” x 2”. Set aside.
    • Cut a strip ¼” thick and 2.5” long. Wrap around the base of the body.
    • Roll a 1/16” log of yellow mixture 5” long. Fold in half and twist. Wrap around top of stripes at base of body. Cut two 1/8” strips of striped clay and wrap around the ends of each arm.
    • Add arms loosely to the sides of the body. (These arms will be bent, so crease with back of knife.)
    • Press the bottle gently onto the front of the body and press the hands onto the sides of the bottle.
  • Beard:
    • Roll a ½” ball of white clay into a teardrop shape 1-1/8” long. Bend back and forth and curl the end.
    • Cut 3/8” off of the large end. Press cut sides of pointed end onto chin area of head.
  • Moustache: Roll two 1/8” balls of clay into teardrops ¼” long. Curl the pointed ends and press onto face, just above the beard with curled ends out.
    • Press head onto toothpick at top of body.
  • Head Covering:
    • Place the rectangle of striped clay over the Wise Man’s head, with one long edge centered above the eyes and fold down the back of his body.
    • Fold sides under and the ends over his shoulders.
    • Take a disk of the yellow mixture about 1/8” thick. Press onto top of head covering. Press seed beads around coronet.



Turbanned WiseMan

Sculpey III in the following colors:

  • Green 022
  • Maroon 382
  • Gold 1086
  • Yellow 072
  • Black 042
  • Tan 301

Materials:

  • Small piece of gold chain
  • Gold seed beads
  • Black seed beads
  • Gift:
    • Mix a ¾” ball of yellow clay and a ¼” ball of tan clay until blended. Roll a 3/8” ball of this mixture into a teardrop shape and flatten slightly to 1/8” thick.
    • Roll a 1/8” ball of the mixture and press gently onto pointed end.
    • Use end of round tooth pick to add gold seed beads and detail lines.
  • Scarf:
    • Flatten some green clay to 1/16” thick. Cut a strip 3.5” long. Center scarf on back of Wise Man, 3/8” below the tip. Wrap around the front and behind the arms. Trim ends to even if necessary.
  • Trim:
    • Flatten some gold and Maroon clay into 1/16” thick sheets. Place one sheet on top of the other. Cut in half and place one sheet again on top of the other.
    • Run through pasta machine on thickest setting.
    • Cut in half and place one stack again on top of the other.
    • Press firmly to attach. Cut several strips 1/16” thick. Wrap one around each end of the scarf, trim excess off of the back.
    • Press ends of scarf firmly onto body. Wrap another strip of trim around base of figure.
  • Positioning Gift:
    • Press hands together gently. Add gift with the pointed end up to the front of the Wise Man, just below hands.
    • Cut a 1.5” section of chain and tuck the ends behind the hands with the end of round toothpick.
    • Use toothpick to secure the loop of chain to the top of the gift.
  • Beard:
    • Roll a ½” ball of black clay into a teardrop shape 1-1/8” long. Cut ¼” off of large end. Bend back and forth and curl the tip.
    • Press cut side onto chin.
  • Moustache: Roll two 1/8” balls of black clay. Roll into teardrop shapes 3/8” log, curl the ends and press onto face, just above beard with the curled ends downward.
  • Turban: Cut top of the head off, just above eyes. Roll a ½” ball of green clay. Cut in half and press the cut side of one half onto the top of the head.
    • Cut a 2” and a 1.75” length of gold chain. Use end of round toothpick to press one end of each chain onto one side of face.
      o Wrap the chains under the beard and press the other ends into the other side of face.
    • Press head onto toothpick at the top of the body.
    • Roll a 3/8” log of green clay and cut in half lengthwise. Wrap around head with the cut side down, covering the ends of the chains.
    • Trim off the excess in back.
    • Roll a 1/16” log of maroon and a 1/16” log of gold. Lay side by side, and roll together. When smooth, twist and wrap around top of turban in the seam. Trim off excess.
    • Use a toothpick to add lines in the top.


Wise Man #3 (Purple)

  • Trim:
    • Flatten some pearl and purple clay into 1/8” thick sheets.
    • Flatten another sheet of purple clay to 1/16” thick. Lay the strips of clay, alternating colors and letting edges touch.
    • Flatten gradually to 1/16” thick. Cut a 1/8” strip.
    • Wrap strip around bottom of figure. Flatten some yellow clay to 1/16” thick. Cut a thin strip and lay it on top of the striped border.
    • Trim excess off in back.
  • Box:
    • Mix a ¾” ball of yellow clay and a ¼” ball of tan clay until blended. Cut a ¼” x ¼” x 3/8” rectangle.
    • Roll a 1/8” ball of yellow mixture, flatten slightly, and press onto top of box.
    • Roll a 1/16” ball of yellow mixture and add to disk on top of box.
    • Use end of a round toothpick to add seed beads around box and to add lines on top and sides.
  • Beard:
    • Flatten some black clay to 1/8” thick.
    • Cut a strip 3/8” x 2”. Cut ¼” slits 1/8” apart across one side of the entire length.
    • Wrap around the head, near the neck. Trim off the excess in the back.
    • Roll two 1/8” balls of brown mixture into ovals. Press onto sides of the head just above hair line.
    • Flatten some black clay to 1/8” thick. Cut a strip 3/8” x 2”. Cut ¼” slits 1/8” apart across one side of the entire length. Wrap around the head, just above the first layer. Trim off the excess in the back. Roll a 1/16” log of black clay. Cut two ¼” pieces. Wrap one over each of the ears.
  • Moustache:
    • Cut a 1/8” ball of clay in half. Roll each half into teardrop shapes and press onto face, just above the beard with the pointed ends out.
