Kid's Chanukah Candle Box
By Amy Koranek and Iris Weiss

What you'll need:

  • Empty box for Menorrah candles
  • 4 oz. Premo Sculpey Pearl Blue
  • 1 oz. each of Sculpey III White and Yellow (I've suggested using PREMO Sculpey in Pearl Blue for the base of the box. The PREMO will make a stronger box that will last for many years because PREMO is very strong. You may substitute Sculpey III, but the box will be more brittle.)
  • White craft glue
  • Ruler
  • Permanent marker
  • Scissors
  • Rolling pin or heavy glass jar
  • Kitchen knife or Sculpey Super Slicer
  • Tissue paper

Some Basic Information
Sculpey III
and PREMO Sculpey should be conditioned before using. To condition, roll and squeeze each color in your hands until the clay becomes soft and pliable and an even consistency.

It¹s important to bake your projects for the right amount of time and at the right temperature. Once your project is complete, follow these baking instructions for each type of clay. Sculpey III  bakes in your home oven for 15 minutes at 275.
Line your baking sheets with aluminum foil when using them to cure polymer clay projects.

Always have an adult assist in the baking process and never touch a clay project until it is completely cool. You may want to use an oven thermometer to make sure the oven temperature is accurate. Overheating polymer clay can cause it to become discolored.

Good working surfaces include a large piece of glass, an index card for small projects or an old baking sheet. It is important that you not place unbaked polymer clay on any good furniture surface. Do not use everyday cooking utensils with clay if you are going to continue using them for preparing food.

Shapes
This project can be made from the following shapes:

  • Ball - Take a lump of clay and roll it in your palms until it¹s smooth.
  • Teardrop - Start with a ball of clay and then taper it on one end with your fingers.
  • Coil - Roll a lump of clay until it¹s long and skinny.
  • Sheet - Start with a large ball of conditioned clay. Smash the ball into a thick pancake. Pinch and flatten the pancake until it becomes thin. Roll over the pancake to smooth out thick areas.

Directions

1. Empty the box and set the candles aside. Measure 3" up from the bottom of the box all the way around and mark it with a permanent marker.

2. Cut off the area at the top of the box so that the box is only 3" tall. Squirt white craft glue on a side of the box. Spread the glue with your finger in an even layer. Repeat on each side of the box. Allow the glue to dry completely. Spread glue on the bottom of the box as well, and allow it to dry completely.

3. After conditioning the Blue Pearl PREMO very well, roll it out into a thin sheet - a little less than 1/8" thick. Cut the sheet into these

Dimensions:

3" X 3-1/8" - 2 pieces

3" X 1-1/8" - 2 pieces

Press the pieces into place on the box front, back, and two sides. Smooth any air bubbles out from underneath the pieces. The dried glue will help adhere the clay to the box.

4. Stand the candlebox up on the remaining blue clay. Trim a piece that will fit the bottom of the box. With your finger, gently rub the seams together making sure the seams are closed and that the sides are connected well.

5. Score a thin line across the box 1-1/4" down from the top. This line will be the trim line for the top of the Menorrah. Roll Yellow Sculpey III into a long thin coil - about 3/16" thick. Press a line of Yellow from the bottom middle of the box up and trim at the line. Starting at the bottom of the Yellow coil, work an arch of Yellow upward and trim at the line. Repeat on the opposite side.

6. Repeat until you have made four arches on each side with the Yellow coil. Each arch should get smaller as you work toward the middle.

Make nine small balls and flatten them into place at the top of each candle holder.

7. Roll White into a coil about 3/16" thick. Cut eight 3/4" long pieces and one piece 1" long. Press the longer piece into the middle and four shorter pieces on each side.

8. Roll nine Yellow teardrops about 1/4". As you press them into place at the top of each candle, pinch the top to look like a flame.

9. If you like, you can decorate the sides and the back with the extra clay. If the sides of the box have been pushed inward, you can pack the inside of the box with tissue paper to prop the sides back up.

Bake the box at 275º for 15 minutes. Allow to cool completely before handling.
