Asian Proverb Accordion Book

Materials and Tools:

  • 4 oz. Premo! Sculpey Translucent #5310
  • Premo! Stamplets rubber stamp kit/Asian
  • Dried rose petals or chili powder
  • Sharp pointed Excel craft knife
  • Sculpey Super Slicer
  • Dye based inks in Black, Gold, Yellow, and Brown
  • Embossing powder in black and gold
  • Make-up sponge
  • Plastic craft brush
  • Soft bristle brush
  • Translucent Liquid Sculpey
  • Acrylic paint in burnt umber or raw sienna
  • Craft-T Metallic Rub-Ons (Gold) or Treasure Gold
  • Black Core matte board
  • 8.5 x 14 (legal size) paper
  • White scrap paper
  • Colored pencils
  • 26" silk ribbon (1/8" wide)
  • E-6000 Adhesive
  • Small tempered glass cutting board or Ceramic tile

Directions:

Clay Cover:

  • Condition 2 oz. of the Translucent clay. Knead in dried rose petals or chili powder. Roll out to 1/8" thickness or a #1 setting on the pasta machine. Place on paper.
  • Stamp with character and floral stamps in a collage style. Place template on sheet, and cut out scalloped window with pointed craft knife. Trim sides with Sculpey Super Slicer.

  • Repeat for back panel. With Super Slicer, flat shimmy under clay to lift and set aside.
  • Condition remaining translucent clay. Roll out to 1/16" or #3 on pasta machine. Stamp geisha in black ink on raw clay.

  • Center window over image, and press lightly to bond, being careful not to mar stamped image. Trim bottom layer slightly larger than top with Sculpey Super Slicer to create a border.
  • With fingernail, slightly round corner edges. Repeat for back cover, using floral stamp. Place on glass or tile. Bake according to package instructions in a calibrated oven set reliably to 275 degrees. Let cool on glass. Do not remove.
  • Using plastic craft brush, paint Translucent Liquid Sculpey over image area and bake again. Let cool completely before removing to avoid warping. (Note: You may also apply a paper thin sheet of translucent Premo over the stamped image. Place translucent clay between 2 sheets of waxed paper and brayer until paper thin.)
Paper Parts:
  • Set your computer's printer to a landscape setting for legal size paper (8.5 x 14). Use a medium weight art paper. Consult printer instructions on printing to special papers.
  • Set your margins for 1.5" top and bottom; 0.25 side margins.
  • Set your font to Viner Hand ITC 24 pts. Download and print the following proverbs at the 1.5" from the top and 5.5" from the top, LEFT ALIGNED settings.

  • Prepare to re-insert the paper to print on the backside of the paper. Type the proverbs so they will print 1.75 from the top and 5.75 from the top, CENTER ALIGNED.

(NOTE: Your will have 2 different inserts for 2 books)
  • Your left aligned sections will be the inside pages of the book. Make marks FROM THE LEFT at 2.5 inches, 5 inches, 7.5 inches, 10 inches, 12.5 inches. Trim the right side all along the 12.5 inch line.
  • Trim the paper into two long strips at the 3.5" and 5" from the top (landscape layout). Accordion fold along the 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 inch markings across the width of the panel. You should have 5 - 2.5" accordion pleated panels. Keep in mind end panels on OPPOSITE sides will be glued to cover.
  • Trim matte board to 2.75 x 3.75 size (2). Stamp edges with floral stamp in gold, cover in gold embossing powder, tap excess, and emboss with heat gun. Ink the inside edges with gold ink using the asian character stamp.
  • With make-up sponge, sponge edges and folds of paper insert with brown ink using sweeping outward motions, so as not to crimp paper edges. Stamp edges with floral stamp in brown. Stamp several images BEFORE re-inking for a ghost image. You may want to practice this technique on blank paper first.
  • Stamp geisha in black, emboss with black powder. Do the same with the floral stamp along the edges.
  • Sponge page with yellow ink, avoiding geisha's face.
  • Color detail of stamped images with colored pencils.
  • Cover your finger with a soft cloth, and burnish a bit of either the Treasure Gold or Craft - T metallic wax on the edges of the page.
  • Repeat the sponging, stamping, and ghost imaging techniques on the back page using the character stamp. Stamp medallions in gold and emboss with gold powder on end panels.

Assembly:
  • Coat baked covers with acrylic paint and soft brush. Scrub into crevices. Let sit for a few minutes. Rub off excess, and then burnish with soft cloth, leaving an antique finish With clean part of cloth, burnish center of image again.
  • Cut white scrap paper and glue to backside of covers. Coat with E-6000. On back cover, lay silk ribbon across paper. Center clay covers on matte board. Give a few minutes to set up.
  • Finish edges of covers, including clay parts with burnish of metallic wax. Buff.
  • . Glue blank panels of book pages to inside covers, removing any excess glue immediately with fingernail and cloth. When dry, fold into compact book, double ribbon, and tie in front.
